On Saturday 25th January, 11:30am until 2pm, Macclesfield will be once again celebrating its silk links with China and the start of the Year of the Rat with a FREE Chinese New Year celebration event organised by Macclesfield Town Council.

There will be photo opportunities with the dragon, Ruby the Rat and Silky the Pig from last year’s celebrations, a chance to taste authentic Chinese food, view shadow puppets created at local schools and care homes as well as enjoying some Chinese craft activities, calligraphy, tea tasting, music and more.

Tytherington School Mandarin Choir will be kick starting the celebrations with a performance in Market Place at 11:30am. Then the Chinese dragon, followed by the wonderful Rat created by Macclesfield Community Artspace, along with Silky the Pig, will depart Market Place and parade to the United Reformed Church at Park Green.

Helena Gowler, Community Engagement Officer for Macclesfield Town Council commented that

‘When we first held the event to celebrate the Year of the Pig in 2019, we were overwhelmed with just how many people came out to celebrate. We are delighted to present this event again to celebrate the Year of the Rat. Visitors to the United Reformed Church will journey through the building to experience different aspects of Chinese celebrations.’
